Ashburton Club Hub

As a service to our community, the Ashburton PTA is fortunate to have parents in a volunteer capacity that can serve as School Clubs Leads who help coordinate and provide general information about before and after school enrichment activities available to Ashburton Elementary School students. Program dates, general session info, fees, and registration links will be posted here. Parents must contact providers directly about activity and instructor specifics. We encourage you to contact activity providers to learn about their organization, rules, policies, and safety measures before enrolling your student(s). Please find program contacts below.

Registration Disclaimers: Before and after school activities from outside vendors, companies or individuals are not sponsored nor endorsed by Ashburton Elementary School, the Ashburton Elementary School PTA, the Board of Education of Montgomery County, or the Superintendent. Activity providers are responsible for students during the time of the scheduled activity and are required to manage arrival and dismissal of their activity. Ashburton Elementary School and the Ashburton Elementary School PTA are not liable for any injuries that occur during extracurricular activities. Please note that the clubs are operated by private vendors and all concerns related to the club should be shared with the vendor. These clubs provide many opportunities for student enrichment and some extra time at school. We want these to be safe, fun experiences for children. Safety includes getting the child to the club and making sure they do not get on the bus with no one there to meet them.

Notify Your Student's Teacher: If your student is registered for a club, you must notify the teacher of the club and dates of attendance. The teacher will help remind students during dismissal but cannot walk them to the club classroom.  Please make sure your student knows their weekly club day(s) and discuss what room the club will be in (the school will announce it at dismissal) and where you will meet them at the end of the activity.

Student Pickup Procedures for Families: MCPS does not provide an activity bus for these clubs. Please be prompt in picking up your student. Dismissal times vary based on club/activity. Please check registration details and email confirmations from the individual program provider to verify the dismissal time of your student's activity. The activity providers are not daycare providers. Parents or designated caregivers must pick up their students outside by the gym entrance doors - Door 24. Caretakers are responsible for on-time pickup and some providers may charge fees for repeated tardiness.

Discover the world of vision, color, and light with playful experiments and a couple of tricks along the way! Make a model of your eye (and owl, bee, and mole eyes too!) to demonstrate the effect of light on pupils. Explore the eye adaptations of nocturnal animals and make your own tarsier. Use prisms to explore colors and wave lengths. Compare light colors to pigments and explore symmetry and reflection with multiple mirrors and crystals. Test the refractive powers of water and gelatin; make your own fiber optic toy and a projector; explore convex and concave mirrors and magnification; and create spinners to demonstrate the ‘persistence of vision’ that explains many common visual effects. Click here for Fall program flier.

Step right up and join us as we discover the world of optics and optical illusions! Bounce light off water, break light into pieces and make straight lines curve without bending them. Come see what your eyes can see in this light adventurous class! Make a model of your own eye and learn how we ‘see’. Explore binocular vision, test for a dominant eye, and mix pigments and light to create new colors. Test how light bends with gelatin, water, and fiber optics and make your own fiber optics light; make binoculars to explore magnification, convex and concave lenses and mirrors; and use mirrors to illustrate the law of reflection. Click here for Fall program flier.

Kaleidoscope Beam into the future and experiment with fiber optics you can take home! Children will make a model of their eye and test the limits of their own sight to learn about blind spots, peripheral vision, and right/left dominance. They will see how the eye looks up close by dissecting a real cow’s eye and use the properties of light and color to create 3D movies, microscopes, and sunglasses! How can you use gelatin and a glass of milk to replicate a sunset? Experiment with mirrors and lenses to illustrate reflection, symmetry, and refraction and make your own kaleidoscope. NOTE: Students who DO NOT want to dissect the eye should register for Illusions. Click here for Fall program flier.
