STEAM Night
Thank you for joining us for STEAM Night!
Join us for Ashburton STEAM Night!
When: Thursday, February 27th, 6:30 to 8:15PM
What: It's Ashburton's annual STEAM night which involves viewing student science projects and hands-on science activities for all attendees. Sign up to present a project on any science, technology, engineering, art or math topic. Individual and group projects (up to 4 students) are welcome. Please submit one registration per project. Note: The deadline to sign up to present a student project has passed. But all students are welcome to join on Thursday for STEAM Night activities and view other student projects.
Tips for a successful project: Students may do experiments and present their results (i.e. measure how fast hot or cold water causes ice to melt). Alternatively, students may read about a topic, such as dinosaurs or the solar system, and present what they have learned. 4th and 5th grade students are expected to do investigations and present their results.
There are lots of resources available online to give kids project ideas. Students may also find science project books in our school library or at the public library (call numbers around J 507).
A few rules:
- The project must fit on a surface the size of a student desk approximately 2 x 3 feet.
- It is recommended that students display their projects and results on a tri-fold board - example here.
- Do not bring liquids to STEAM Night. Take pictures of liquids and post them on your display board.
- All students should be careful NOT to select a topic that involves fires, flames, explosive chemical reactions, or animals (alive or dead).
For Parents: This is not a drop off event. Parents must remain with their students throughout. There will be no food available at this event.
~ We're looking for parent and community volunteers to serve as interviewers! ~
If you have an interest in science, art, or technology, this is a great opportunity to engage with our students and encourage their learning. You don’t need to be a professional in the field—just bring your enthusiasm! If you work in the STEAM fields, even better since you would then be able to talk to kids about how you use science in your everyday career.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Be available on Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 in the all purpose room at Ashburton.
- Speak briefly with students about their projects, asking questions to help them explain their work, share what they’ve learned, and reflect on their experiences.
- Distribute a small reward to each student as recognition for their hard work.
If you’re interested in volunteering as an interviewer, please sign up here by Tuesday, February 25.
Thank you for supporting our students and making this event a success!
